Write

The first stage of writing a book is … writing the book. But you don’t have to do it all alone. My writing services will get you from a blank page to a finished draft.

Editorial Review

A quick once-over to spot the largest issues and point you in the direction your book needs to go.

What I will do:

  • List the strengths of the book as I see them
  • Identify the 3–5 impact points, i.e., ways I think you can improve the book
  • Recommend next steps

Common impact points:

  • Main argument is unclear or lacks force.
  • Losing the thread of the story/argument
  • Too many or unclear terms
  • Inconsistent character
  • Using dialogue to explain everything (Show, don’t tell)

Typical comments:

  • I lose the arc of the story/argument around Ch. 4. Look at your outline (or reverse outline) and make sure you know how everything fits together, then look at your connectors.
  • I’m having a hard time understanding this character’s underlying motivation. Oftentimes she feels like she’s there just to advance the plot. Give her some minimum desire and revise accordingly.
  • This concept needs a clearer definition. It seems to make sense in Ch. 2, but by Ch. 8 you seem to use it much more loosely.

Ways to go from here:

  • Revise, addressing the impact points, then move on to a dev or line edit.
  • Level up to coaching, ghost revision, book doctoring, or a dev edit.

Book Coaching

Regular meetings to encourage you, keep you accountable, troubleshoot, and identify next steps.

What I will do:

  • Block out weekly or bi-weekly exclusive coaching sessions
  • Check in with you on your progress
  • Workshop emotional and craft problems
  • Help you set a target for next time
  • Encourage and support you on your way to publication

Ways to go from here:

  • Typically, you’ll go to a REVISE step.

Ghostwriting

Tell me what you know, and I’ll turn it into a book written in your voice.

What I will do:

  • Work with you to develop the book concept and outline
  • Interview you and read any supplied materials to develop the content
  • Send you regular updates so we can calibrate
  • Give you advice on sending it around to beta readers
  • Revise based on all feedback

Ways to go from here:

  • I typically advise you find a new editor to make a line editing pass. It’s always good to get a fresh set of eyes on a project.
